organised by the Austrian Branch of the ILA in cooperation with the Department of European, International and Comparative Law. The conference marked a special occasion: exactly one hundred years after the ILA last held its biennial conference in Vienna in 1926, the international legal community returned to the city.
The Conference was formally opened in the Main Ceremonial Hall of the University of Vienna. Rector Sebastian Schütze, Dean Brigitta Zöchling-Jud, ILA Austrian Branch President August Reinisch, ILA President Maria Gavouneli, ILA Executive Chair Christine Chinkin and ILA Director of Studies Lucas Lixinski welcomed participants to Vienna, followed by an opening address by Christoph Grabenwarter, President of the Austrian Constitutional Court.
Over five days, scholars and practitioners from around the world came together for the working sessions of more than 20 ILA committees and study groups and seven plenary panels addressing current challenges in international law. The Conference concluded with the discussion and adoption of ILA resolutions and a plenary panel on “International Law as a Tool of Resistance”.
The academic programme was complemented by numerous opportunities for informal exchange, including a welcome reception in the University’s historic Arcaded Courtyard, a traditional Viennese Heuriger evening, a formal Conference Dinner at the Hofburg Palace with a keynote address by Georg Kodek, President of the Austrian Supreme Court, as well as an Embassy Evening and committee and study group dinners across Vienna.
